Reaching the next generation

My friends over at SWERVE posted some thoughts on reaching the next generation. Here are their thoughts:
* Their world is smaller and their perspective is broader. Because of technology, most have been raised with a global mindset. My best friend lived across the street. Their best friend might live across the ocean.
* They have a wider definition of “friends”. To me a friend was someone you spent time with and confided in. Today a friend can be someone you may not have ever met before they clicked on your Facebook page and asked to be your friend.
* They’re more experiential. Most in my generation were into accumulating possessions. Many of the younger generation are into accumulating experiences. I read about other countries in school. Many in this generation have visited the countries I read about.
* Most have been under-challenged. Many in this generation have been given much yet they’ve been challenged little. They have more potential than most realize.
* Their world is gray. I was raised believing in absolute truth. Many in the up- coming generation believe truth is relative. “What is true for me may not be true for you.”
* They’re searching for a cause. This generation is looking for something (anything) worthwhile to live for. When they find a cause, they’ll go to extreme measures to make a difference.

I can't agree more with these observations. Our students are global in their relationships. Facebook has created a new definition of friendship. Perhaps the most convicting observation for the church is that this generation is looking for a cause, something worth living for!! Are we (the church) giving them one? Students want a cause and they want to make an impact on the world. We must as a church provide opportunities for students to get behind a cause. If we do they will truly live!

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Michael Gates Gill was a high-flying, six-figure-earning advertising executive years ago before he was abruptly fired. He had created huge campaigns for companies like Christian Dior and Ford and lived an even bigger life, with luxury automobiles, lavish vacations and fabulous clothes.

These days, however, he's traded his $3,000 Brooks Brothers suits for khakis and a green apron; the big bucks for a $10 an hour job as a barista at Starbucks. But Gill says he couldn't be happier.

"Losing my job turned out to be a gift in disguise."

After 26 years at J. Walter Thompson, a leading advertising agency, the then 63-year-old Gill was invited to an early breakfast and was told that he was getting the boot. He made too much money. Someone younger would work for less, he was told.

"Never go out to breakfast," he warns before bursting into laughter. "It's like the Mafia. You will never return." Video Watch the happy barista »

He can joke about it now, but Gill says he was devastated by his firing.

"I remember walking outside and bursting into tears," he says over a steaming cup of coffee at his current place of employment, a Starbucks in Bronxville, New York. "I was stunned. I knew that that part of my life was over."

That was just the start of a terrible reversal of fortune. In a few short years, Gill, the Yale-educated son of the famed New Yorker writer Brendan Gill, closed the consulting business he started after he was laid off, got divorced and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He had hit both the rock and the bottom and was continuing to fall.

A trip to Starbucks would irrevocably change his life, he says. Unbeknownst to him, the coffee shop was holding a hiring fair the morning he walked in for his daily dose of caffeine. A manager approached him and asked if he would like to apply for a job. Without thinking, he said yes.

That was five years ago. These days, when the divorced father of five is not whipping up a caramel macchiato or perfecting his latte foam, he's sweeping floors and scrubbing toilets.

"I still have trouble with some of the drinks," he admits, "but I'm a good cleaner.... I can make a toilet shine like a Ferrari."

If life continues on an upswing for Gill, he may one day be able to purchase a Ferrari. His memoir, "How Starbucks Saved My Life," became a New York Times bestseller. The actor Tom Hanks has plans to produce and star in the film version. Gus Van Sant has agreed to direct.

"When I lost my job I thought my life was over," he says. "I didn't realize it was just the beginning." He smiles contentedly and declares, "I may have a part-time job, but I have a full-time life."

He is also sharing everything he has learned, hitting the lecture tour with his "uplifting tale of personal transformation."

Home for Gill is now a modest apartment in the attic of an old house about five minutes away from the 25-room mansion where he was raised.

Moses prayed in Psalm 90:12 "So teach us to number our days, that we gain a heart of wisdom." Each day is a gift from God. We are not promised tomorrow. A few weeks ago a guy who attended our church in the past had a massive heart attack and died in his home at age 40. It was a shock to all.

Just finished Spiritual Leadership by J. Oswald Sanders for a second time. This book happens to be one of the best! I decided to read the book a second time as a devotional guide and I was glad I did. Sanders offers some thought provoking principles in leadership that moved me to prayer daily. I recommend this book highly as we're all leaders and influence those around us even if we don't view ourselves as leaders.

Exercise and Reading

Paul told Timothy "...exercise yourself towards godliness. For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come." (1 Timothy 4:7&8). Paul did not say "just become more godly and don't worry about your physical appearance" he told Timothy that "exercise profits a little." I want the little and I don't think Paul was encouraging Timothy not to train physically. I think what Paul was saying here is that exercise should be a rhythm of life but not more important than growing godly! I trying to do both well and to find the balance Paul talks about.

Paul also had a passion for reading: 2 Timothy 4:13. I'm working on compiling my 2009 reading list. Any recommendations? I'll be posting this list next week.

The call to follow Christ is often not an easy call or a free one. God can call us to remote places to work with people of different races. He may ask us to speak another language not with our mouth but a language of LOVE with our hands, feet and resources. Abby has responded to the call of God. She and her friend are in Mozambique, Africa for several months serving at an orphanage where running water and an abundance of electrical power is absent. Her faith and trust in God amazes me and I wanted to share her courage with you. Join me in prayer for Abby and that God's provision and protection would be made evident to her during her stay in Mozambique!

Communicating without words

Just because you're quiet it does not mean your not communicating. Albert Mehrabian’s research shows that communication is influenced only 7% by words, 38% by tone of voice, and 55% by body language. James 1:19 reads: "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry..." Although the discipline of being quick to listen and slow to speak it very important it is not enough. For our body language speaks as loud or louder than our words. I've been know to wear my emotions on sleeve but I'm trying harness the power of my body language. What are you saying when you are not saying anything at all?

Why pray? God already knows what is on our mind right? He already knows what we need. In fact He knows what we need more than we know what we need. We do not pray to inform God but to remind ourselves that with God there is hope. When we pray we show ourselves that our reliance is in Him. Our prayer life reveals our dependence and trust. Should we be praying for God to move or should we be praying to move towards God?

Holiday Rush

Almost a month since my last post which was not really a post at all. So much has gone on and so much is going on. I had an awesome Thanksgiving which included getting stranded in the woods with my brother-in-law for a few hours. We took the truck into the woods and got caught in swamp and we pushed our Thanksgiving meal back a few hours. We had to leave his truck there but he got it the next day. What a memory - one I will surely never forget!

The big black cloud was lifted on Saturday when I killed my first deer of the 2009 season with Dan. Not only was this my first deer (2nd ever) this season it was my first gutting of a deer. It is much easier to jump in and do it than it is to watch. I'm loving these new stories to tell. I'll be in the woods some more this year so pray for me to get the big one.

We are starting a new series this week with our adults on Sundays called "iTouch Christmas".I get to open the series this Sunday and I'm excited about the opportunity to share what I believe God has laid on my heart.

I've also had a student from Ohio here the last few days. He is interning during his winter break. It's great to have Andrew here - having someone watch your every move makes you look at your life a little more closely. It is also nice to have someone around the office to brainstorm with, plan, dream and most importantly work.

Andrew has been helping me with our annual church Christmas musical.He has been setting up all week and will be the light guy for the shows. He is a "good and faithful servant!" Seriously though - I'm loving having him here.

The holidays are here and our calendars are packed but we must daily remember - Immanuel: God is with us! No matter what we feel or what we are facing - He is with us!

illuminate.08 was an amazing weekend! We had a student create an opening video for this retreat and we tried to keep it a secret but we had to use it a few times as a promotion video. It worked really well for both. Check it out:

We try and put a lot of thought and prep into our weekend experience. A few leaders and the band went down early on Friday to set up the meeting room, place gifts on all the beds and place signage on every door. We like to show the students when they arrive that we have been there ahead of time. Our worship team was lead by our new worship pastor and he did an amazing job leading us!
We had two focuses for the weekend: ONE - God has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light (1 Peter 2:9) for a reason but just because you are out of the darkness it doesn't mean you have it all together. TWO - God has asked us to be city on a hill and to let His light shine through our lives (Matthew 5:14).
The weekend led up to our current series at theMIX nine:12 "fall on your world" where we are focusing on sharing our story of what Christ has done in our lives with others.
Over the weekend we heard from a few of our leaders and each talk fit together well thematically: Darla spoke on Friday, Alex spoke on Saturday, Steven shared his story on Sunday morning and I took the Saturday night talk.
We have seen a renewed sense of passion within the students who attended the retreat and our prayer is that this passion will create new habits and establish disciplines in their lives.

Computers keep me humble!!! We almost had a night without technical difficulties but my PowerBook G4 let me down. I think its time for a new baby. I was recording my talk in GarageBand and presenting it with Keynote and it crashed as I was showing a clip from Jumper. My talk was about living a life with boundaries and after my computer stopped in the middle of the scene I was able to gather my thoughts and the students attention. It still was a hug letdown for me...

Here is the bottom line from the talk:
1. Freedom is not in the forbidden although we often think it is.
2. Boundaries create freedom and the farther we stay from the edge the easier it is to stay within the lines.

Andrew really led us vocally on Thursday night and the band continues to make strides as a team. We really are blessed to have such a talented group of guys to lead us each week.

I really looking forward to this Thursday as I lay down the vision for the fall. We are going to hit evangelism hard and make God famous amongst our friends and in our schools.

Thursday Night Reflections

The worship team did a great job on Thursday night as did Philip. Philip gave a talk on surrender and the idea that God looks on the heart not the outward appearance as man does. He came out of the book of Joel. The highlight of the night was the worship moment in the second set following the message. Andrew and the band introduced a new song "Holy God" that really captured the students. KJ (a college student mind you) created a video to help promo the fall retreat - I have attached it below.

I'm really blessed to have a team of leaders and students who setup and take down every week for me. I am so thankful for their servant hearts and all that they put into theMIX every week. I could not do it without them.

Thursday Night Reflections

We finished our series on Friendship Hills Thursday night with the hill of loyalty. On the hill of loyalty we talked about the story of Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel 18-20. Jonathan was a loyal friend to the end! I also made reference to the fact no one will always be loyal except for Christ. "There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother!" I think that this series was effective in getting students to evaluate their friendships and how much they can impact their life. The series was not only about the kind of friends you have but the kind of friend you are. I had Erin create a game to open the sermon with called "Famous Friends." Can you guess who these famous friends are? Most of the students knew all the famous friends and it was a fun way to intro the sermon.

Worship started the night and Andrew was a bit under the weather but he made it through! Thanks bro! KJ created a video on friendships - see past posts for the video. The students thought is was hilarious. Attendance seems to be picking back up and I'm excited about that. I'm still shaping my thought on our next series leading into the fall retreat. We are focusing our energy on illuminate.08 and praying for an incredible weekend.

What is up with the renewed popularity of JV football here in the 'Ville? It seems JV football is the new Varsity football. A bunch of students were missing on Thursday night. They were not out getting in trouble or at home doing homework - they were at the JV football games. I'm am convinced more than ever that we have to start podcasting our services so students can connect through various avenues with theMIX nine:12.

This week we continued our 3 week series on Friendship Hills. We tackled the hill of confrontation using Psalm 27:6. We showed another clip from "The Hills" and talked about the importance of friends asking each other tough questions and holding each other accountable. We also used the story of Nathan confronting David in 2 Samuel 12 after his sin with Bathsheba.

I'm praying for deeper responses to God in our worship time and for a greater hunger of Gods Word in our group.

slowing down... to enjoy ministry (life)!

I want to slow down. I want to slow down and enjoy ministry (life) more. I want to slow down and smile more. I want to slow down and rest more. I want to slow down and follow Christ more. I want to slow down and exercise more. I want to slow down and enjoy more!

It has been an incredible season in my life and ministry. I have gone more places, met more people and ate more food then any other time in my life over the past few months. It has been an exciting adventure but I am feeling the affects lately. I need to slow down and enjoy life.

This thought came to me last night as I was frantically setting up for our middle school gathering last night - which I am totally enjoying. I was running around laminating cards, setting up chairs, hooking up the PS2, watching football (priorities), studying for my talk and trying to figure out new software that promises to help me track our students better. Being busy in ministry (life) is seductive and if we are not careful we will always be busy in ministry (life) and rarely enjoying ministry (life). In ministry (life) busyness is often seen as success or effectiveness. I have come to learn in my short 7 years of ministry that this the farthest from the truth. Success and effectiveness in ministry (life) comes only through a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A healthy relationship with God, your spouse, your family, your friends and a healthy self point the way to enjoyment in ministry (life).

I'm committed to this - I committed to finding a pace in ministry and an enjoyment that will accompany it through slowing down. After all God rested - shouldn't we? I believe strongly that sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do it rest.

Psalm 46:10 says "Be still, and know that I am God."

Wild Goose Chase by Mark Batterson was a great read. I find Mark to be someone who inspires me as a follower of Christ and as a leader. Wild Goose Chase is full of encouragement and conviction. In the book Mark address' six cages that hinder the adventurous pursuit of following Christ. If you want to know what the cages are you need to buy the book (which I recommend) and read it for yourself.

Mark has been a leader I have been following for about a year now and I find his leadership style and approach to life inspiring. From life goals to ministry creativity Mark is someone to learn from. You can learn more from Mark at his blog: evotional.

We began a new series tonight at theMIX nine:12 called "Friendship Hills".
With school starting just last week I wanted to spend a few weeks talking about the importance of choosing your friendships. In Andy Stanley's Seven Checkpoints For Students he stresses this importance with the following statement: "Your friends will determine the quality and direction of your life." I used this statement and MTV's hit show "The Hills" as the springboard for this series.

We talked about two "Friendship Hills": the hill of decision and the hill of sacrifice. The talk went well and I even showed a 4 minute clip for this weeks episode of "The Hills". We talk about the huge decision of who you allow into your friendship circle and the idea that in order to be a true friend - you will need to learn how to live on the hill of sacrifice. We used the example of Christ in John 15 to guide this part of the talk.

Worship went really well and Andrew did a great job leading the students. Attendance was a bit low but our core students were there and I expect that as we approach October our numbers will grow and more high school students in our area will make their way to theMIX nine:12.

Tonight was the launch of our new gathering for middle school students. It was a great first night with 31 students and 12 adult leaders. We opened the night with worship lead by Adam and Kendell - they did great followed by a game that revealed the smartest middle school was Oak Knoll. Every first Sunday of the month is "God at the Movies". We are trying to help students see how they can use culture to communicate truths about God and His principles. I showed a the closing scenes from Shrek and shared the story of Samuel anointing David to be King in 1 Samuel 16. We camped on the idea that God looks upon the heart and not the outward appearance and how important it is that we do the same with other students in our circles of influence.

We have had an overwhelming response from our parents partnering with us to make this ministry happen. Tonight 10 parents joined Rhonda and I and it was beautiful to see all those parents engaging students and serving in many different areas. We have been blessed with a great parents and we are excited to see this ministry to middle school students evolve this school year.

Hosting SC Master's Commission

This weekend I have been hosting the SC Master's Commission guys at our church. They have been here since Thursday night to work the NASCAR race as a fundraiser for their program. We have been able to bless them with FLC(our recently renovated gym), Dish Network, Krispy Kreme (5 dozen), Little Caesars (20 pizzas & 9 two-litters of soda), Chick-fil-A and even a late night prank at a meeting they were having. Our prank was the most random act that was sure to be moment to be remembered for a long time. I have included a video of the prank below (minor editing was needed).

This last Thursday was the first Thursday that our students were back at school. You could tell that they were a bit tired and that the night was going long. Overall the service went well other than Adam's keyboard not working. I really appreciate all that the general (Lee our sound guy) does each week to make it happen.

I talked on chasing after God and tied it into my talk on PACE from last week. I used the verse in James 4:8 where James tells us to "come near to God and that He will come near to us." I also used the story of the prodigal son as it was recently covered in the One Minute Bible that we have been using.

We have been having a hard time getting students to register for coming events. We have a Switchfoot concert on Friday and the Dodgeball tournament happening in October. My prayer is that we hit a time where we students sign up weeks ahead of time instead of hours before the event.

Each week I wanting to reflect our service at theMIX. This last Thursday was the last Thursday of a few things:
1. It was the last Thursday before school started
2. It was the last Thursday of combined middle school and high school students

The night had an incredibly slow start. The count down video was long over before we got started. The worship team did well and we even placed a mic in front of Adam. We've got hopes that he'll be leading someday soon! I gave a talk inspired from Wild Goose Chase by Mark Batterson called PACE. I encouraged the students with an acrostic any lead pastor would be proud of - ha ha!

Pray: But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Matthew 6:6

Apply: Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. James 1:22-24

All-in-all the night went well. A visiting area youth pastor was there and was blown away by the fact that our students help pickup every week. I was reminded of the incredible blessing of being here at this time - working with this group of students.

I was extremely tired on Thursday after returning from NYSUM Wednesday evening but it was still a great night. We had each one of the students from the NYSUM team share about a highlight from their experience in the big apple.

This was an incredible team all the way around. Each student contributed in their own special way on the mission. To be honest I was a bit worried about team unity and the individual personalities on the team but it was amazing to see them grow together as our time went on. I truly believe these students have a greater respect and understanding for each other and I also believe that God deposited something in each of their hearts about what He is asking them to do with their lives.

Back to Thursday - Lee did another great job with sound and Andrew has done incredible this summer with putting together a band every week! I can't believe summer is over in less than two weeks. We have so much to do to get ready for theMIX nine:12 and theMIX 6:eight split beginning in September! Band tryouts, leadership teams, small groups, meals, retreats - did I mention small groups?

We had the opportunity to sings a few worship songs, Merf shared her testimony, Hayden preached, we all did a little Lean on Me and then we served them all dinner. It was a great night of pushing through the darkness.

We had a very long day yesterday so I was unable to recap the day but here is how it went:

6am - the guys woke up to prepare breakfast but discovered we were not needed so we headed to Starbucks!
7am - breakfast - not one girl made it to breakfast
8:30am - class
9am - we left of St. John's Bread and Life soup kitchen. We stayed until 2:30p and prepared meals for over 300 people. We also helped prepare dozens of emergency food bags and other food bank type packages.

3p - team debrief
4:30 - class prep for the AIDS hospital
5p - dinner at NYSUM (pasta and what seemed like extra oil)
5:30 - 8:45 at the hospital. We sang several songs and visited with several awesome patients there.

9pm - A White Castle run. Several on our team had never been there before - can't say they will be back either.
9:30p - team debrief and balloon animal prep for our outreach this morning!

Tonight was great. I opened the service with prayer and then the
students took it from there.

Each student shared a bit about themselves and their favorite verse.
It was beautiful to hear all the different verses tonight.

Then Joel and Adam lead us in worship: How Great is Our God, Here is
Our King and Lord I Give You May Heart. The people really joined in
and there was an anthem of praise in that room.

Then we busted out Lean On Me with the motions! They loved it and I
don't ever think that song will be old.

Hayden then brought the word coming from Eph. 2:10 and it was really
encouraging. The people really responded to Hayden challenge to be
prepared to be used of God.

We closed the service with a time of prayer and each student had the
chance to pray with others. It was an awesome thing to see.

Afterwards they invited us into their homes. The girls got to visit
the womens home and the guys went to the fellas house. We jammed their
for a bit which was real cool.

We ended our night with a walk around the NYSUM hood - it was nice but
I'm so tired. Goodnight

In just about 3 weeks we'll be launching a new middle school ministry here at the church. When I arrived here three years ago we had a great middle school ministry happening but with staff transitions and other unforeseen events we merged the middle school program with our high school group and called it theMIX. It was the right thing to do at the time and we have had two great years of combined ministry.

This school year we have a rising class of nearly 20 6th graders (middle school in VA is 6-8 grades) and a large number of 7th graders who never connected to theMIX. We decided over a month ago that a gathering designed just for middle schoolers was needed once more. We have partnered with parents to make this new approach happen quickly. Last Monday we hosted a middle school parent and student swim and information meeting and we had 17 families represented and nearly 15 middle school students there.

It was a great gathering. We all ate together and then let the students swim while I met with the parents to discuss our strategy. You can visit our website for more details.

We have chosen to keep the name of theMIX as our student ministry identity but we have broken it down to designate the gatherings:

theMIX nine:12 is our high school gathering and theMIX 6:eight is our middle school gathering. There is still a lot to happen before our first middle school meeting but we are so excited!

Simple Service

I had the opportunity to preach last week in our Sunday morning service. We are in the middle of a series called "Simple Summer". I fought for the topic of simple service as God has been challenging me to be a server in every area of my life not just in the world student ministry here at MCC. I've had some incredible examples over the years - you know who you are! God is still teaching me how to be a "servant of all" and not just a servant in what I feel gifted to do or called to do. My friend Andrew has really been encouraging me to begin listening to Francis Chan. I have heard of him through Passion but it was not until today that I heard him speak. I have now subscribed to his podcast and I began listening to his series on the Holy Spirit from earlier this year. I'm really having a hard time with what he is talking about because he delivers in such a way that the Spirit of God is convicting me - which I know is supposed to happen but its difficult. I wanted to encourage you to listen to Francis speak. Here is a clip from the 2007 Catalyst Conference - you'll see what I mean:

There is a new name in the headlines these days - Katy Perry is "living the life" at the top of the charts. She has worked hard and changed greatly to attain this attention and favor with fans. Cutting herself off from her church roots and giving into condemnation of the "family of God" and satan himself, Katy has started a new life with a whole new outlook.

Before she attained this kind of fame Katy was known to her friends as Katy Hudson, the daughter of church planting pastors. At age 15 she scored a small Christian label contract and put out her first CD.

Here is an excerpt interview from gostudents.com when Katy was 17 following her short-lived career as a Christian musician.

The mood of the music has not changed much as Katy is an incredibly gifted artist and she has only grown in her talent.

Although recognizing her gift as a gift from God, Katy is now struggling to use her gift in a way that would please and honor God.

As a youth pastor I'm reminded that I must help students find platforms to exercise their God given gifts and continually encourage them to own their relationship with Christ.

That is most of the numbers from the senior getaway, everything else was countless - including the fun.

Thanks Class of 2008 for an incredible getaway. I had a blast and to date that was the most memorable weekend of ministry I have ever had!

The little things!

After 35 days my father was released from the hospital yesterday and is now home! It has been a long journey for him and the family and my mothers strength throughout this season is a testament to her faith, trust and strength in Christ. My father has a long road of recovery ahead of him but each day is a new day and a gift of life. It will be the little things that will make all the difference for him.

That is true in every area of life - the little things make all the difference. If we are talking about sin, financial gain, spiritual disciplines or even exercise the little things always add up. So start small and remain faithful and watch your life be transformed be the little things.

Smile a little more. Give a little more. Laugh a little more. Play a little more. Cry a little more. Read a little more. Workout a little more. Dream a little more. Reflect a little more. Hike a little more. Worship a little more. Work in your yard a little more. Pray a little more. Sing a little more. Dance a little more. Encourage a little more. Trust a little more. Blog a little more!

Ten Questions Every Leader Should Answer!

Craig Groeschel is lead pastor of LifeChurch.tv and a creative genius. I read Craig's blog - SWERVE often and he is currently in a series of asking reflective questions. I have found these questions thought-provoking and difficult but they are a great measuring stick of effective leadership within the church. Here is one set of questions I'm working through today:

1. Are the people closest to me in ministry lifting me higher or dragging me down?

2. How have I intentionally developed the leaders around me in the past week?

3. Am I speaking transparently with at least two other close trusted friends on a weekly basis?

4. Am I submitting myself to the correction and coaching of at least two mentors?

5. Am I holding a grudge against someone?

6. Am I speaking well of other ministers?

7. Am I falling for the temptation of comparing, complaining, criticizing or gossiping?

8. Are my words and relationships characterized by words of faith or negativity?

9. Do people enjoy being around me or am I often “down”?

10. Have I made at least three new ministry friends in the last year?

rhythm

I had the opportunity to talk at a small gathering of students last night about rhythm. If you know me personally you know I have no rhythm musically but I talked about the rhythm of being a Christ follower. I believe that God has pace or stride for His own life that it is evident in Genesis 1. In the very familiar creation story we see this rhythm as at the end of each day the writer of Genesis states "and there was evening and there was morning." The first rhythm we see is that each day started with evening or rest. In our current culture we view morning as the beginning of the day and not evening. I believe God intended our days to start with rest before work. The second rhythm we see is the rhythm an entire day of rest. I stopped to ponder this a bit yesterday and then reread the creation story. I find it difficult to fathom that this creative force put it all to rest for a day but He did. I shared in my devotion that I find the rhythm of daily rest and the rhythm of a day of rest difficult to stay in stride with. If we are out of rhythm spiritually - rest may be absent. I'm working diligently to build in rhythms of rest this week thanks to the creation story.

Inconsistency

So I made the statement a few weeks ago about blogging daily for a week - well as you see that really didn't work for me. I'm reminded of a statement Mike Yaconelli said in Messy Spirituality: "Right now the only consistency in my life is my inconsistency." Now I'm not saying I'm falling of the deep-end of sin but I've had a few surprises as of late. My sister stopped in for a few days and we had a great time. She called one day and asked if she could come down and visit - I said yes and she was here the next day. We had a blast hanging out together and visiting DC and downtown Richmond. My dog as been a bit sick the last few days and $285 he is feeling much better.

Inconsistency is at times unavoidable. Life happens, people stop in, dogs get sick, meetings run late and people sleep in.

My prayer is that in the inconsistency of my life I would find a stride of remaining humble, calm and controlled.

public transportation

The Europeans know their benefit of public transportation and so do I. I have spent $30 in the last two days just trying to keep my tank above E and to be able to still get around town. Gas is $3.199 right now meaning to fill my 17 gallon tank I would need to drop $55 to fill-her-up.

While in Europe we traveled by plan, train, metro, tube and automobile. I really enjoyed the public transit as it allowed me to read, sleep, rest and talk intently with friends. I miss that extra time to do what I love to do and the ability to trust someone else behind the wheel or throttle but perhaps the thing I miss the most is the sense of saving money I felt when taking a metro instead of renting a car.

Public Transportation... less smog... faster travel... multitasking... less MONEY!

Europeans know how to relax!

While in England I really enjoyed their pace. They live life at a different pace than we do in America - yes they drive as fast as we do but they relax longer and more often then us. Each day our 3 hour class would break at 10:15 for a half hour of tea and chocolate. While in France I noticed that around 14:00-16:00p (Europeans still use military time) all the shops and stores closed for a few hours of rest and relaxation. Thats right a two hour nap and/or lunch break! Must be nice - although if I must be totally honest two hours is an average lunch meeting for a pastor.

Today was a crazy day packed of meetings and relationship time. Here is how my day went:

I did not get any tea time today but I did get a lot of coffee and a great lunch. I love what I get to do as Student Ministry Pastor and I love the example from my friends in Europe. So I'm off to read, relax and hit the bed.

Global Culturalisation

It has been awhile since my last post. To be honest leaving the country for 11 days and being without the internet most of the time broke my weak blogging stride. I'll be working hard to get back into it this week with the goal to blog daily. My content will be my overseas adventure in review.

As some of you know I had the opportunity to teach a class on "Engaging Culture" at the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) base just outside London, England in late February. It was a great time and an awesome gift from God. It was my second time in England and my eyes were open to new things. One thing I saw this trip were scenes of global culturalisation! By that I mean I saw a large blend of my American culture in English culture. I know we are connected historically but come on we are two very different nations today with two different cultures. Within our first few hours in England we went to lunch at an English Cavery. This is much like an American buffet but loaded with typical English fixings - it was delicious! I ate so much better this second trip than my first.

While waiting for our table I was able to take in my surroundings. This is when I felt like I was back in America. While waiting (yes - they have waiting list in England as well) I sat at a bistro table with our friends. As we were talking I noticed that the family sitting next to us were enjoying some beverages. The teenagers in the family we downing some good old Red Bull. Then I noticed the two women on our other side enjoying dinner with two younger children with them. The seemed to be really enjoying the food and video playing on their portable DVD player while eating. By this time the first family had left another family with a small son took their place. You guessed it - as they sat there awaiting their food their son was intensely starring down his Game Boy Advance. I felt like I waw in any restaurant, in any place, in any city in America.

Of course the people talked differently but I felt no culture shock. I like culture shock and you will hear more about that in posts to come. What I love most about being able to travel is to experience other cultures and how they experience daily life. I don't want to travel the world and feel at home everywhere. I want to travel the world and feel like I have never been there before. You know?

So I guess what I am saying is culturally be you and encourage others cultures to keep their heritage and culture distinct!
